5 Day Design Sprint – Smartsips

Smartsips is a smart coffee machine that allows you to sync, set up and schedule your home brew directly from your phone.

The design sprint lasted 5 days of design work, with no collaboration involved – this was a solo project.

The brief requested a number of deliverables. In the end the sprint resulted in the following:

  • Mind-mapping and ideation
  • Competitor & benchmark research
  • Feature identification for MVP

  • Brand territories and naming exercise
  • Foundation-level brand identity (logo, palette, typography and motion)

  • User journey mapping for key features
  • 50+ screens for 5 key user flows
  •  Comprehensive foundation & design system using the 8 point grid
  • Every screen following a strict set of rules of auto-layout
  • AA accessibility across the park
  • Clickable prototype to get around the app

In order to speed up the ideation and research process, I did a lightning brainstorming exercise to map out every feature that needs studying.

Following the ideation process, 5 key flows were identified for a potential MVP:

  • Set up and sync
  • Dashboard and controls
  • Brewing and alerts
  • Help centre
  • Settings and account

With this information in mind, I went ahead and mapped out the user journey for these flows based on experience, best practices and benchmarks.

Considering the time window, I couldn’t consider user testing in the end.

As the brand was not one of the key deliverables, I decided to allocate less time on this thread and do no more than what’s necessary for this to gain an identity.

The extensive sprint resulted in working prototype of 50+ screens, with accessibility, innovation, ease of use and edge cases considered.

The hypothetical next steps to be taken would be usability testing and improving on the MVP features.

The design system was based on a foundation of primitives and tokens, followed by an atomic component library. Along with the 8 point grid set up, creating and testing new components can be done seamlessly.
